Eco Tourists : A New Breed Of Travelers

They are a relatively new breed. With backpacks and binoculars they resemble the ordinary tourist but for the fact that they saddle the spirit of adventure with that of respect for nature. Meet the eco tourists!

Eco-tourism is largely gaining popularity among tourists. This form of travel involves journeying to natural destinations, inhabited or uninhabited. Education about the environment is also inbuilt in this form of tourism. So is sensitivity toward the environment and the native indigenous communities. This tourism lays emphasis on minimising the impact of travel on the environment, building environmental and cultural awareness and respect, raising funds for conservation and for the welfare of the local community.

It is more of a ‘giving back to nature’. A eco-tourism trip includes activities that do not have any adverse impact on nature like bird watching, trekking, nature trail, river rafting; activities that minimise human impact and maximise economic, environmental and social benefits.

An eco-tourist is very particular about certain things like avoiding littering, saying no to noise pollution by keeping blaring radios, tape recorders other sound devices in check. Since conservation of biodiversity tops a eco- tourist’s mind, he or she curbs the urge to cut or take away flora or fauna. Use of plastics, wood as fuel, detergent,in streams springs while washing and bathing are also shunned.

Another important aspect of eco-tourism is respecting the local culture and norms. So, whether it is in dressing or avoiding ostentatious display of wealth a eco-tourist shows sensitivity to the indigenous culture and lifestyle. Observing the sanctity of holy places and sites is also a closely linked and important aspect .

If you are contemplating being a eco-tourist, choose a guide or operator who really follows eco- tourism not merely preaches about it. Also, educate yourself about the place, and the people you are visiting. As being well versed with their beliefs and customs, will help you respect them. A good way to check if you are a true eco-tourist is to question did you leave the place you visited in a much better condition? If your answer is a yes, welcome to the breed!
